Join our tea party celebrations for the NHS’ 70th birthday!

We’re hosting a day of celebrations at North Middlesex University Hospital tomorrow (5 July) to mark the 70th birthday of the founding of the NHS in 1948.

All patients, visitors and local people are warmly invited to join us for a celebration free cup of tea and traditional biscuits to mark the occasion. It will be held in the hospital’s restaurant from 2-4.30pm. There will be tea, squash and old-style  Jammie Dodgers, Bourbons and Digestives, accompanied by the sounds of 1940s and 1950s music.

The day will begin with a special “Happy birthday” sing-along by children from Wilbury Junior School in the hospital’s main atrium at 11am.

There will be a host of 70th birthday stalls showcasing the hospital’s 99 year history and celebrating its achievements and changes over the last 70 years.

A giant seven-tier birthday cake depicting the NHS’ 70 year history will be on display and will be ceremonially cut at 3.30pm by the Trust’s chair, Dusty Amroliwala. It will then be shared among inpatients who aren’t able to attend the tea party.

Staff, health partners and local community organisations will have exhibits showing the changing face of NHS services over seven decades, including in sexual health, HIV, mental health, pathology, histopathy (the microscopic examination of changes in human cells), dementia, breastfeeding, maternity care, tissue viability and the hospital’s new Freedom to Speak Up Guardians who support staff with concerns about patient care.

A hospital history stall will show the changing face of the hospital since its founding in 1919 to today. Former staff of the hospital will be represented by the North Mid Branch of the NHS Retirement Fellowship. The face of staff education, development, wellbeing and volunteering today will also be represented.

The shape of future services will be represented by the hospital’s transformation team, including a new digital app, known as LocumsNest that will make it easier for the hospital’s doctors to sign up for “bank” shifts.

Local community groups and partners will also have stalls to celebrate the NHS birthday including Healthwatch Enfield, Enfield Carers, Macmillan Cancer Support, SGV Cancer Support, Age UK, Royal College of Nursing and NHS Professionals.

The day’s timetable is as follows:

 ·         Opening of Event: 11am, atrium. Deborah Wheeler, Director of Nursing and Midwifery

·         Wilbury Junior School Choir: 11–11:30am, atrium

·         Tea Party: 2-4.30pm, hospital restaurant
