A senior A&E consultant at North Mid and an innovative approach to supporting staff-led improvement projects have both been shortlisted for the final of the 2019 Health Service Journal Awards.

Dr Andres Izquierdo-Martin, clinical director for emergency care at North Mid, and a cornerstone of our expanded and redeveloped emergency department, has been shortlisted for the prestigious title of Clinical Leader of the Year 2019.

Nominated by divisional director of operations for the Trust’s medicine and urgent care division, Russell Nightingale, Dr Martin is one of just six clinical leaders from across the UK to make it through to the final of this category in the HSJ Awards for 2019.

Announcing the shortlist, HSJ editor Alastair MacLellan said the judging panel had selected finalists despite being faced with “tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants”.

The second North Mid finalist is in the ‘staff engagement’ category, and recognises the work led by the Trust’s service improvement team to champion and support staff-led improvements, using an approach developed by Listening into Action. Now in its second year, the North Mid LiA programme has resulted in improvements throughout the Trust, based on feedback and ideas from staff who work in clinical and support services, including extending blood test opening hours for children, better coordination of transport arrangements for patients being discharged, and increased wellbeing support for staff to ensure they’re healthy and able to work

Maria Kane, Chief Executive of North Middlesex University Hospital, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for these two important categories recognising the collaborative efforts and dedication of our staff members. We are committed to delivering improved outcomes for our patients, and to be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement.  These nominations will be a tremendous boost to staff at North Mid, and I am sure it will bolster our continued efforts to improve our services.”

HSJ editor Alistair Mclellan, said:

“We would like to congratulate Dr Andres Izquierdo-Martin and the North Mid LiA team on being nominated in two categories ahead of this year’s 2019 HSJ awards. We are looking forward to welcoming them to the ceremony in November, to join us in recognising the very best achievements and innovations in the healthcare sector. The entrants this year have been of incredible calibre, and each of the finalists has been chosen based on their outstanding commitment to excellence in healthcare.”
