The department of general surgery is the largest surgical department at the hospital and includes the sub-specialty services of:
- breast surgery
- colorectal surgery
- upper GI surgery
- vascular surgery (outpatient services)
- emergency surgery
The department also provides emergency cover for the hospital, treating around 2,000 admissions per year.
What we offer
The department has six full-time consultant posts covering a number of sub-specialties and three full-time consultant emergency surgeons supported by middle-grade and junior medical staff, clinical nurse specialists, emergency pathway co-ordinators and an enhanced recovery nurse.
The department offers surgical, laparoscopic, endoscopic and outpatient treatments, including a one-stop minor operations service. We offer enhanced recovery across all specialities.
A pelvic floor service has been set up and offers sacral nerve stimulation service (SNS) and rectal physiology testing. We now offer an oncoplastic service for breast

General surgery patients receive treatment across the surgical wards, in main theatres and the endoscopy units.
