General surgery

The department of general surgery is the largest surgical department at the hospital and includes the sub-specialty services of:

  • breast surgery
  • colorectal surgery
  • upper GI surgery
  • vascular surgery (outpatient services)
  • emergency surgery
The department also provides emergency cover for the hospital, treating around 2,000 admissions per year.

What we offer

The department has six full-time consultant posts covering a number of sub-specialties and three full-time consultant emergency surgeons supported by middle-grade and junior medical staff, clinical nurse specialists, emergency pathway co-ordinators and an enhanced recovery nurse.

The department offers surgical, laparoscopic, endoscopic and outpatient treatments, including a one-stop minor operations service. We offer enhanced recovery across all specialities.
