10 Steps Promise launched to improve care for children with sickle cell disorder at North Mid

The children’s sickle cell team at North Mid has launched a set of principles to support children and young people with sickle cell disorder.

The 10 Steps Promise, has been developed in collaboration with the Essenelle Foundation, a mental health charity supporting people with sickle cell disorder and their families, to improve the hospital experience for children and young people with sickle cell disorder.  The teams engaged with a large group of patients and their parents or carers to give us a greater understanding of what is important to our patients and used the feedback to develop the 10 steps.

The children’s sickle cell team and the Essenelle Foundation came together on Wednesday 16 June to launch the 10 Steps Promise. They are:

  1. Access to a play specialist
  2. Pain relief within 30 minutes of admission when in sickle crisis
  3. We will always treat patients and families with patience and understanding and respect how they are feeling
  4. A clinical nurse specialist will follow-up with patients and families 24 hours after being discharged
  5. Offered apheresis procedure when clinically appropriate
  6. Rapid access when unwell – a Paediatric Passport
  7. The nurses and doctors will listen to you and take guidance from you about your condition
  8. The nurse and doctors will take the time to understand the things that are important to you and your care
  9. We will be mindful of your journey and feelings through each hospital visit
  10. We will work together to make you feel better

Saturday 19 June is officially designated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The international awareness day is observed annually with the goal to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease and the challenges experienced by patients their families and caregivers.  North Mid is a regional unit for Paediatric Sickle Cell, with over 200 patients who use our services.
