North Mid nurse crowned winner at prestigious NHS Parliamentary Awards

A nurse from North Middlesex University Hospital has been crowned the winner of the prestigious Nursing and Midwifery Award at this year’s NHS Parliamentary Awards.

Belinda Okyere has been announced as the regional winner of the award in London and has also been shortlisted for the national award.

Recognised as a superb ambassador for North Mid, Belinda is the nursing lead for the Trust’s ABC Parents outreach programme (Achieving a Better Community).

ABC Parents is a parent education programme, and gives new parents, with little or no knowledge of child health, the confidence to care for their child’s common illnesses as well as provide lifesaving skills. Over 100 families have completed the programme, benefiting from free advice and support on basic life support (BLS), illness recognition, choking, allergy, and injury first aid, and vaccination education.

Belinda’s passion for reducing health inequalities in Enfield and Haringey has seen her provide parents and children with life-saving CPR training, including 50 children at a local dance school to mark Restart a Heart Day.

The Awards recognise health and care staff for their contribution to the NHS, and individuals and teams are nominated by the hospital’s local Member of Parliament. Belinda was nominated by Feryal Clark, MP for Enfield North.

Belinda said: “Getting recognition on this level for something I am so passionate about means everything to me. It has been so rewarding being able to provide parents and children with such important and life-changing skills and knowledge.

“I’m incredibly proud of the project and this award and I can’t thank every person enough who has helped with the ABC parents – little or big – along the way.”
