North Mid Charity hits high note with donations

North Mid Charity receives donation of £2,000 from Haringey Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Project to support paediatric red cell patients at North Mid.

In early 2000, May Richards MBE applied for funding from a partnership formed between Middlesex University, Enfield council, Broadwater Farm Residents Association and a tenant’s association in Edmonton to set up a Gospel Festival to fundraise for a range of community objectives.

The first festival was held at Broadwater Farm Community Centre in 2000 and was such a success that although funding was only awarded for a year, the project would run again. Having reached out to North Mid, May decided that given the work that the hospital does with sickle cell and thalassemia that donations raised from the festival would be donated to support patients at the hospital.

May was awarded an MBE for her work, and when she sadly died in 2020 at the age of 89, the core organising group was joined by May’s niece, Nadine Mackenzie to continue May’s vision and inspiration.

20 years on from the first event, this year’s £2,000 donation to North Mid Charity is for projects linked to sickle cell and thalassaemia paediatric patients at North Mid such as our Summer Sickle Cell community event at Tottenham Hotspur.
