North Mid obstetrics and gynaecology team win BMA Medical Book Award

A book written by consultant obstetrician and gynaecologists at North Mid has been announced as winner of a 2021 BMA Medical Book Award.

How to perform operative procedures in obstetrics and gynaecology, written by Wai Yoong, Abha Govind and Wasim Lodhi, is a video platform based book on operative procedures for obstetrics and gynaecology trainees.

Over 900 books were submitted and the prestigious panel included Dames Parveen Kumar and Clare Gerada as well as Dr Chand Nagpaul (Chair of the BMA). Judges were impressed that the book thoroughly describes many key index operations in the Royal College of Obstetrics and gynaecology training syllabus. They praised the fact that it offers an innovative, media-rich approach to the subject, and the book follows easy-to-follow guidance of the procedures.

The awarding panel described the book as important and timely, as trainees had missed access to surgery during Covid-19.

Commenting on the win, Wai Yoong, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at North Mid, said: “It was a team effort and we’re really proud to have won this award. Some of the chapters were written by our trainees and the award will encourage our SHOs and registrars to appreciate that you don't have to work in a tertiary hospital to write a book! With the reduction in surgery that occurred during the first peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to create a way for trainees to continue to learn and this book helped to do just that.”
