£6million Day Surgery Unit officially opens at North Mid

The new Day Surgery Unit (DSU) at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust formally opened today, Tuesday 26 September 2023, following a £6million investment.

The unit will treat patients for some of the most common surgical procedures, and will help tackle and reduce our backlog of patients waiting for surgery by thousands every year.

North Mid one of 50 to receive the funding for new hubs which will help treat an additional 4,000 patients here every year. Procedures will be high volume low complexity surgery, as recommended by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, with particular emphasis on ophthalmology, general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics (including spinal surgery), gynaecology, ear nose and throat, and urology.

These operations can be performed quickly and effectively in one place, improving quality and efficiency which will mean patients have shorter waits for surgery, will be more likely to go home on the same day, and will be less likely to need additional treatment after surgery.

As the hubs are separated from emergency services, surgical beds are kept free for patients waiting for planned operations, reducing the risk of short-notice cancellations and improving infection control.

Dr Nnenna Osuji, chief executive at North Mid, said: “It was wonderful to be able to celebrate the official opening of our Day Surgery Unit with the teams who have worked so hard to make it a reality and esteemed guests from our local community. The opening marks a milestone in our efforts to treat more patients needing surgery and reduce our backlog. I would like to thank everyone involved in helping make its opening a reality.”
