About our acute medicine service

The acute medicine department specialises in the rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute medical conditions.

Acute medicine is delivered  through three co-located units

  • Acute medical unit, including 8 beds for rapid assessment by the medical team after presentation to ED and a further 31 beds for short staying patients (48 hours)
  • Amber unit, a 17 bedded short stay area for elderly frail patients
  • Same Day Emergency Care Unit, a same day emergency care service to safely manage patients with acute conditions via non-admitted pathways

The acute medicine service is led by consultants who are available to provide early senior review and decision making to minimize waits and delays in the patients’ care journey. The acute medicine department is supported by a multiprofessional team and a large number of other medical specialties .
