The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is committed to encouraging and supporting a program of volunteer involvement in wards, departments within the hospital and the community services.

We are supported by a team of dedicated volunteers with the sole focus – to help us deliver outstanding experience for our patients and their relatives and carers.

Who can volunteer?

We are looking for individuals who can display some key personal qualities such as empathy and the ability to listen and help our patients and our service users.

You will need to be at least 17 years old and will need to commit to volunteer for a minimum block of 4 hours a week for at least 6 months.

We welcome residents from the boroughs of Enfield and Haringey as well as North Central London.

What we offer?

  • Visiting and talking to patients in the wards, Accident & Emergency, outpatients department and the community.
  • Mealtime assistance on wards. This does not include feeding patients.
  • Meeting and greeting patients, families and visitors, as well as signposting to their destinations.
  • Assisting patients and visitors especially those with language difficulties to use the self-check machines to register their clinic attendances and using the car parking machines.
  • supporting with collecting patient and carer experience feedback i.e., the Friends and Family Test (FFT) and the radiotherapy survey.
  • Support communities based in Chase Farm Hospital and St. Michaels as befrienders.
  • Nutrition & dietetics - assisting with administrative tasks and audits.
  • Pharmacy – talking to and helping patients and staff in our inpatient and outpatient dispensary hatches.
  • Gardening - maintaining and looking after our staff vegetable garden.
  • Paediatrics - engaging in activities such as arts and craft, movie time and general play. Need to be 18 years old.
  • Maternity - assisting the ward staff by supporting mothers and hospital staff. Need to be 18 years old.
  • Pet Therapy - visiting patients and relatives on wards with your pet. Your pet will need to be registered with Patient As Therapy charity.
  • Music Therapy - playing instruments/singing to patients and their relatives.
  • Administration - supporting department staff with tasks such as photocopying, scanning, data entry, preparing notes, answering, and directing calls.
  • Ad hoc activities from staff requests such as audits, help with events, Trust training exercise events, etc...

Please note that:

  • our volunteer placements are subject to two references, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and occupational health clearances however, we are streamlining this process to deploy volunteers quickly.
