Stroke patients spread holiday cheer: painting Christmas ceramics for North Mid Charity

In the spirit of resilience and creativity, stroke patients have found a therapeutic outlet by painting Christmas ceramics to raise over £400 for the North Mid Charity. The fundraising was the heartwarming culmination of the Patients Arts Programme, funded by the charity earlier in the year.

For patients in the Acute Stroke Unit, engaging in art activities has proven to be a powerful form of rehabilitation. The sculpting clay is an excellent activity for stroke patients as the clay is soft and easy to work with. This means that our patients are still able to create beautiful ceramic objects with limited arm and hand function. The painting not only stimulates the mind but also helps improve motor skills and coordination.

The act of sculpting and painting the Christmas ceramics allows stroke patients to express their creativity in a variety of ways. From intricate designs to vibrant colours, each piece becomes a unique reflection of the artist's journey and personal style.

Relatives and carers of our patients have also been invited to join in the art sessions, enjoying participating in creative activities with their loved ones while visiting.

Stroke patients, determined to give back to the programme that has supported them, have decided to sell their creations to raise funds. Roseman Angus (pictured) enjoyed making and painting some of the ceramics during the sessions and was delighted to see so many being sold when he joined the team at the stall.

The sales were a huge success with all 80 designs being sold raising over £400, with all of the proceeds from the sales will go towards funding the Patient Arts Programme for 2024.
